Rev-Sharing Sites
Rev-Sharing Sites Hidden Benefits for Writers
by Maria O’Brien aka WriterGig
Often, writers evaluate a revenue-sharing content site based solely on how much their articles will likely earn, or on other writers’ earnings. Some online content writers refuse to write for article databases or rev-sharing sites at all because they prefer to write their own websites and keep all the earnings, or write for upfront pay where they know exactly how much they will be paid.
Ironically, revenue-sharing sites can be a great fit for writers in either of these two categories, as well as those who don’t think they’d earn enough on HubPages or eHow to make it worth their time. And when you approach it from another angle, the article earnings themselves become the cash bonus.
From my experience as an online content writer, I’ve found the following hidden benefits to writing for content sites that also offer residual income:
- Exposure as a writer, leading to other writing gigs. My highest-paying freelance writing gig came to me through a software company’s content manager, who saw my eHow profile and contacted me to write for their website.
- Traffic for your own blog or websites. Through user profiles and links within articles, you can drive traffic to your website, blog or other work.
- Backlinks to your sites. Some revenue-sharing sites allow you to use do-follow links that point to your blog or other articles. These do-follow links, unlike links with the no-follow tag, are excellent for building page rank with Google and other search engines.
- Affiliate sales commissions. Some sites, such as eHow, allow a few no-follow links in the Resources section. This is a good spot to place highly relevant products or services for which you are an affiliate and will earn commission on succesful leads or sales.
- Networking with other writers, webmasters and online marketers also writing on the site. Connections made on and through eHow have gained me exposure and promotion as a writer and blogger, and I do the same for fellow eHow writers.
So before you eschew revenue-sharing content sites altogether, consider the different ways these online communities can benefit you and your work — and what you can bring to the community. The monthly payments will be icing on the cake.
